The first high-way in history: this is how the Appia Antica could be defined. Designed in 312 BC by the censor Appio Claudio Cieco, the Appia provided a direct connection between Rome and Capua (subsequently extended to Brindisi) with a straight route, easily accessible by both carts and pedestrians. The goal was to allow the rapid movement of Roman troops towards the south during the second Samnite war (326-304 BC) and a direct connection with Greece, the East and Egypt, fundamental for military expeditions, travel and trade.

Today the Appia Antica Regional Park is a unique place in the world where history merges with nature, where biodiversity lives in close contact with the remains of an ancient past, so much so that it can be defined as a true open-air museum open.

With its 2300 years of history, the Appia Antica shows intact the signs of an illustrious and fascinating past, still clearly visible among the ruins that overlook the edges of the road.
