The beautiful Navona Square today takes its unusual shape thanks to the fact that it stands exactly on the ruins of the ancient stadium of Domitian.
Domitian built his stadium during the I century AD for his favourite athletic shows, so called “agones”. The toponym of the square derives from this term, thanks the corruption from “agone” it became “in agone”, “nagone”, “navone” and therefore “Navona”.
The stadium was able to house around 30.000 people and it was richly decorated and adorned with statues in the upper arches, one of which is the famous Pasquino, placed today near the square.
The tour starts on Navona Square, one of the most famous squares of Rome. We can observe its peculiar shape, talking at the same time about the transformation of this area over the centuries. The second part of the tour takes places in the secret underground area dedicated to Domitian Stadium where it will be possible to observe ruins and discover the popular shows that took place in there.
