Tivoli is a delightful little town just 35 km from Rome, considered a cultural and archaeological treasure of Lazio. In addition to being interesting from an urban point of view, Tivoli welcomes three culturally and historically important places, worthy of a visit:
- Hadrian Villa: During ancient times, this area of Lazio became the favorite destination of the emperor Hadrian, who had a sumptuous villa built there in the 2nd century AD, made up of pools, spas and extraordinary gardens. Todays, its interesting ruins are visible in an impressive and vast archaeological area.
- Este Villa: commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, around 1550 it is one of the symbols of the Italian Renaissance, an architectural and scenographic jewel of Tivoli declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Today this extraordinary complex is famous all over the world for the splendid fountains that decorate it, characterized by the valuable and suggestive water features and for being the most beautiful “Italian garden” in Europe.
- Gregorian Villa: It’s a natural area of great historical and landscape value. The site is best known for hosting the Great Cascade, and can be considered a very special example of a romantic garden.
