The ancient city of Ostia owes its existence to the proximity of the Tiber river and the sea.
Given Rome’s interest in extending its dominion as far as the sea, the center of Ostia was already built in the 4th century BC, and immediately had an initial role of controlling the waterway.
With the dominance of Rome on the Mediterranean, Ostia became the main mercantile emporium of the capital, linked above all to the supply of grain. City life developed further in the imperial era, providing the center with its own forum, temples, baths and theaters, etc.
Today many of these ruins are among the best preserved and allow us to grasp the life and customs of the ancient era.
