The Sant’Angelo district is the geographical area where the Jewish ghetto of Rome was built, considered one of the oldest in the world.

The ghetto was built in 1555 by Pope Paul IV, who revoked all the rights granted to Roman Jews, calling the ghetto the “menagerie of the Jews”, and originally providing it with only three entrances to enter and exit. At that time the Jewish people were subjected to a series of obligations and prohibitions and over the years the ghetto expanded its territorial borders more and more until the “liberation” of 1849 when, following the proclamation of the Italian Republic, segregation was abolished. In 1870 the Jews were equated with Italian citizens and over the years the ancient streets and old buildings were demolished to make way for new buildings and constructions.

Our tour begins with the story of this district from the earliest settlements of the Jews in Rome, with particular attention given to the origins of the ghetto, going to observe the very few architectural evidence of that period. We will alternate the story with the evocation of dramatic events and moments of rebirth, through memories, important anecdotes and popular legends. The walk will end by admiring the ancient ruins, which still remain today in the area, integrating perfectly with the surrounding urban fabric.
