NOTE:
Before you continue the reading about the Museums, we think it’s important to give you some information that can help you live the experience there without stress. The Vatican Museums are one of the most important art collections in the world and in the last few years the number of visitors has increased greatly. The Museums, unlike other museums of Rome, didn’t take any political action to reduce the number of visitors during the day. The result, in many moments of the year, is exploring the museums shoulder to shoulder with many other visitors; this can, of course, be very frustrating and unconfortable for those who want to simply enjoy the beauty of art. With that in mind, our suggestion is to avoid the Vatican Museums in the high season (from March to September). If this is not possible, at least consider a time of day when the Museums are not too overrun.
Of course, we can help you with making the best decision!
The Vatican Museums are one of the most beautiful art collections in the world given that they exhibit, since the Renaissance, the enormous collection of works of art accumulated over the centuries by the Popes. The greatest artists of that era contributed to making this place still magical for those who visit it today.
The Vatican Museums are also among the largest museums in the world, for this reason we will tend to favor the most important sections in this tour to ensure a good view: the first stop will be inside the Pio Clementino Museum, with the important collection of ancient sculptures begun by Pope Julius II and completed by his successors, Pope Pius VI and Clement XIV. You will cross the three Galleries (Galleria dei Candelabri, Galleria degli Arazzi, Galleria delle Carte Geografiche) up to the Raphael Rooms, where it will be possible to admire the most impressive paintings by this great artist, initially always commissioned by Pope Julius II and immediately later also by his successors.
The tour will end in the most important room of the museums: the Sistine Chapel, still today a place of worship and official seat for the conclave, as well as a place where there are frescoes of extraordinary beauty, by Michelangelo Buonarroti and Tuscan Renaissance artists.
