The Ara Pacis Museum mainly preserves the monumental altar (Ara Pacis Augustae) dedicated to the deity of Peace from which it takes its name, built in the first century BC.
The Ara Pacis Augustae is one of the most important celebratory monuments of the imperial age. Its construction was commissioned by Augustus and the Roman Senate to celebrate the success of the military campaign against the Gauls.
The monument was then found in fragments and was reassembled in 1938. Since then, the Ara has been housed in a pavilion which soon proved to be inadequate in terms of preservation of the monument. In 2006, a completely new building was therefore built to a design by the American architecture firm Richard Meier & Partners.
During the tour we will talk about the importance of this monument, analyzing the interesting iconographic repertoire, and at the same time comparisons between antiquity and modernity will not be neglected, deepening the stylistic-architectural choices of Richard Meier in creating a space perfectly in union with this ancient monument.
