The Janiculum Hill, today, is one of the favourite destinations of the Romans and foreigners to admire Rome from above: its panorama is among the most incredible in the city. Once there, the gaze is lost among the countless roofs of the Roman houses, the ancient ruins, the monuments and the Baroque domes, the hills that color the city and the Apennine ranges in the background. But the Janiculum, like almost every corner of Rome, is not only a place to get lost in amazement, but also a point in the city with a long story to tell, full of important events linked to the city of yesterday and today.

At the time of the foundation of Rome, the Janiculum was an interesting area for the newborn city of Rome as it was strategic for the control of the river. The occupation of the Janiculum was in fact necessary for the defence of Rome.

This area, however, is also linked to more recent historical facts that contributed to make this place as we see it today: it was the scene of the heroic events of the fighters for the Roman Republic in 1849. The area was, thus, subsequently transformed since 1883 by the new Italian institutions on a public walk and dedicated to the memory of the Defense of Rome.
